The NCRB 2017 data identifies, a total of 3,59,849 cases against women, increase in comparison to 2016 and 2015. NCRB 2017 data also says rise in so called ‘honour’ crimes, which may include confinement under house, torture, rape and murder. NCRB data includes different heads for crimes in the name of honour, apart from honour killings, such as illicit relationship, casteism, love affairs and class conflicts. NCRB reports 92 honour killings in 2017 and 71 in the year 2016.
In Tamil Nadu, Periyar devised a rationalist marriage system called the ‘Self Respect Marriage’ and advocated inter-caste marriage for creating a casteless society. Novel way of marriage was adopted by many people from different castes including Muslims and more than 8000 such marriages were organised during 1928 to 1932. The same Tamil Nadu is witnessing 195 Honour Killings in last 5 years.
